So, you’ve finally decided to take that giant leap of faith and start your very own home based internet business. You’ve decided that it’s finally time to step up to the plate and claim your share of all those internet riches you keep hearing about. Only problem is, now that you’ve finally made your decision, it seems like a pretty daunting task deciding what to do next. Using the term “information overload” to describe the problem seems like a huge understatement.

Well, if you’re really serious about starting your own home based internet business, the next step really doesn’t have to be that difficult at all. There are 3 relatively simple ways to start making an online income and one of them is sure to fit your particular idea of what it is you would like to do. So, just relax, take a deep breath, and peruse the following list until you find something that strikes the right cord.

1-Join One or Several Affiliate Programs

This is probably one of the easiest and quickest ways to get  started making money online. The internet is full of products that have affiliate programs you can join and most of them pay generous commissions. When you join an affiliate program, you are simply making an agreement with the owner of a product that you will receive a commision in exchange for referring a prospect to that person’s product (usually a sales page that you have sent the prospect to via your affiliate link) if that prospect ends up making a purchase.

Start by choosing a product or service that you’re interested in and then visit some of the websites which have achieved top rankings for the keywords which describe that topic. You’re sure to find the top affiliate programs for that industry relatively quickly. Or, try visiting one of the many affiliate program directories (you can find them quickly enough in Google) and scan their listings and recommendations until you find something that appeals to you.

This is a good one for newbies since you don’t even need your own website to get started. You will, however, need to learn how to use the pay per clicks so you can get some targeted traffic to your affiliate link. Once you start generating some income from the pay per clicks, you can then start reinvesting some of your profits and get yourself set up with your own website. By that time the prospect of getting set up with your own website won’t seem so daunting.

2-Join a Residual Income Program

Residual income programs are somewhat similiar to affiliate programs in that you typically get paid for referring a prospect to the program’s website if that prospect decides to make a purchase. However, the difference lies in the fact that with these programs you also have the opportunity to earn a monthly recurring income if the prospect you refer becomes a paying member of the residual income opportunity program. For example, I belong to one of these programs myself. If a prospect comes to my website and clicks on a link which takes them to the sales page for the product and they buy, then I get a commission. However, if that prospect also decides to become a  member of the residual income opportunity program, then I get a check every month as long as that prospect remains a member of that program.

People tend to be skeptical of these programs and get them confused  with pyramid schemes. The way to tell if one of these programs is a pyramid scheme is to simply determine if the company in question offers a real honest to goodness product or service. If so, it cannot be classified as a pyramid scheme and you should be okay. Don’t be scared off by the fact that you will most likely have to pay a monthly fee to participate in the residual income opportunity. If you can build a downline for yourself in one of these programs, the monthly fee will be negligible compared to the potential residual income you could earn.  Alot of these programs will provide you with your own cookie cutter website, which is okay if you are just getting started. Again, use the pay per clicks to start generating some traffic and then work on getting your own site up so you can start to build your own opt in list.

3-Sell a Hard Good or Downloadable Infoproduct

Okay, okay, I know this one doesn’t sound so simple or easy, but to be honest, it’s really not as hard as it might first appear. Selling a hard good entails offering a real physical product (like fishing poles, for instance) for sale in your own online retail store. If this idea really appeals to you, go for it. Brainstorm some products you would enjoy selling, then do some keyword research in Wordtracker to develop a targeted niche within that market (deep sea fishing poles?).

After that, you can use a drop ship source directory or the search engines to find manufacturers or distributors who will drop ship the merchandise for you (meaning they ship it directly to the customer and you don’t have to carry any inventory). Then go to Ebay or Yahoo and sign up for one of their stores.  I know from personal experience that Yahoo has some merchant hosting packages that are great and super easy to use. They’ll even provide you with a shopping cart feature and help get you set up with a merchant account (so you can accept credit cards). Plus, you’ll get some traffic already built in since millions of people are using their shopping directory to browse for products every day.

As for the website itself, don’t worry. Most hosting companies today have some type of site builidng solution available for those customers who wouldn’t know an html code from a java script. Believe me folks, if I, a completely technically useless and html challenged technophobe can do this, ANYONE can.

Now, as to the infoproduct. By the way, I mean YOUR OWN infoproduct. Everyone on the web and their mother will tell you that this is the best way to make the really big bucks online. Write about something you know and/or love. The topic of internet marketing seems to have been way overdone. Unless, of course, you are a true expert on some
niche internet marketing subject, then definitely do it. Just don’t do it because everyone else is.

As for the actual writing, you don’t even have to do that if you really don’t want to. You can check out a site like elance.com and postyour project and have writers bid on completing the project for you! And there are so many easy to use PDF ebook creators available that formatting the book should pose no technical challenge whatsoever. Set up a simple little one sales page website with a link for payment processing, optimize the site for the engines, use the pay per clicks, find some JV partners, and you’re in the money!

By the way, I know of some guys who have about 10 or 15 of these little mini sites set up selling little reports on niche topics and raking in an average of $2,000 a month from each site. And they’re incredibly easy to set up and practically run on autopilot once you do!

for your keywords based on the amount you bid. Imagine that you have built a great website with relevant keywords, excellent keyword density, perfect anchor text, and good links back to your site. You now look on the search engines for your keywords and your site doesn’t show up?

What do you do?

Your best bet is to advertise. You could advertise on television, on the radio, and in news papers but that could be beyond your budget and it might not be cost effective. An alternative could be Pay Per Click Advertising. How to Use Pay Per Click Advertising You must follow the guidelines for each of the PPC search engines to format your ads correctly. That is not difficult to do but it does limit how many words and what kind of words you may use.

It requires you to make your ad well written with short headlines and limited ad content. Here are recommendations for making good PPC ads: Use relevant keywords in your title. You only get a second or two to catch the searchers attention. Write your ad specifically for the target audience. They are the people you want to click through and take some kind of action. You do not want people clicking your ad that have no interest in what you are “selling”, because they will just cost you money with no hope of return on your investment.

Point the ad to a specific page on your site where the information is relevant to the searcher. Otherwise they will hit the back key and move on to another site. Many PPC advertisers just send their viewers to their home page and wonder why they get poor results. You want the page they land on to get them to take some kind of action. That may be to buy something, sign up for your newsletter, or make a yes or no decision.

Do not use all capitalizations or use exclamation points in your title. The search engines specifically state not to do this. They use human editors and your ad can be rejected. Try to get somewhere in the top five positions so your ad will show up on the first page of the buyers’ search. Often times there is a great difference in the cost between the first position and the second position and between the second position and third position. After you have gained experience with PPC ads, start experimenting with changes to your ads and test them to see if you can get a better return. The big PPC adsvertisers split test their ads by rotating them to see if small changes in the wording affect the click throughs.

Where to advertise The two top places to advertise are Google Adwords and Yahoo’s Overture. MSN appears to be gearing up for a PPC system similar to Google and Yahoo. Right now they get their ads from Yahoo. The Dark Side of PPC There is, unfortunately, a problem going on with the Pay Per Click search engines. It is called PPC fraud. PPC fraud can break your bank account. PPC fraud is when someone or some group decides to click on your ad multiple times with no intention except to cost you money.

These can be in the hundreds or thousands of clicks. They typically use click bots that mimic human click throughs from various IP Addresses making it hard for the search engines to recognize what is happening. Who would do this? It could be a competitor trying to bankrupt you. It could be an individual or groups trying to make money from systems similar to Google Adsense. It could be internet vandals just doing it for kicks. It doesn’t matter who is doing it. It matters that you can find yourself in a heap of financial trouble. What you should do is monitor your ads. You should do that anyway to determine how your campaign is going i.e. are you getting the return on investment you need, and you should do it for ad testing.

If you sense that click fraud is happening, immediately suspend your campaign and contact your PPC engine and let them know about it. You may be able to get your PPC engine to refund the fraudulent amounts. Google has stated in their annual report that they may have to refund PPC fraud and they don’t know how much it will cost them. This is not meant to scare you away from using PPC. It is meant to make you aware that it is happening so that you can approach it prudently. Conclusion Pay Per Click when done right can be an effective and low cost means to draw live paying customers to your web pages and be a strong tool in your arsenal for making money on the internet.

Now put those two together, web hosting and a good domain name, and you’re set to go! Create a plan for action and stick to it – I’ll be honest with you upfront. Chances are, you may not reach your financial goal by the end of the first month. In fact, the excitment of being able to get your money’s worth out of the work you put into your website, may turn into monotony and discouragement. But don’t lose hope! You need to stick to what you’ve set out to do, keep your website up to date on the hour if necessary, and make sure your visitors have plenty to read! Avoid rambling on about nothing and don’t cheat – Google has perhaps the largest database in the world, full of website listings and search results.

Chances are, if you mirror your website with another content saturated website that’s been around for quite some time, and Google does one of their special keyword analysis trick on your website and finds out about it, your AdSense application will most likely be turned down for unauthentic content. Have an open mind and be creative with your writing. Shoot for about 25 solid web pages before you submit your Google AdSense application. Bottom line, give them something to talk about! You’ll need it in the months to come! Begin formulating marketing thoughts – This is perhaps where the line between sanity, and spamity comes in that you’ll end up approaching before too long. Some webmasters can’t keep their cool and end up going off the deep end, spamming hundreds of innocent lives, and contaminating hundreds more of chat rooms and IRC channels.

For every 100 visitors (unique or not) that come, plan to write one more article or section of your website; make it a news item or something. Keep your website clean and neatly organized, don’t let it end up looking like your brother’s bedroom or closet a few months down the road from now. And if things begin to pick up with your website, set aside an email account and allow your visitors to send in their own articles or writings for you to publish. This in itself could be very rewarding because not only will your visitors end up generating your revenues, but they could also end up being your main supplier of articles to publish. The main point of discussion here, though, is to stay on top of things and keep up with the work. You’ll eventually be glad you did later on down the line when you’re short $200 on a down payment for a new Honda Civic. Getting Finished: Bringing Your Website Before the Judges Okay, so this is the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Spit shine that last corner of your website and get ready to show it off. Then make your way over to http://www.google.com/adsense and send in your application. It will take a couple days for your application to be reviewed and accepted, if in the likely event that it is.

There’s nothing worse than seeing the exact same advertisement all over the internet or in email messages from ten different marketers. How much perceived value will your message have when it arrives and the reader is seeing it for the tenth time? Take the time to tweak the ad to suit your target audience and subscribers before sending it out. Personalize it to make the ad your own so it doesn’t even seem like an advertisement anymore.

4) Not paying for your own domain name and hosting account

Even novice internet users can tell a free hosted site when they see one. It’s very unprofessional and suggests to your visitors that you haven’t made any money online and probably don’t know what you’re doing. If you haven’t even taken the small step towards setting up your business properly then how can your visitors trust you? Less than $10 a year for a domain name at GoDaddy.com and maybe $5 per month for a small hosting account won’t break your bank account. In fact, it will probably help to add to your account in the long run.

5) Not capturing your leads before you send them on to the affiliate product site

If you spend your time and money marketing to get someone to click on one of your affiliate links then they leave the product site without purchasing, what have you gained? Nothing! You have just lost the time and money it took to get that one click-through in the first place. Set up a squeeze page so you can capture your lead’s email address before you send them on to the product site. That way if they don’t buy you can follow up with them later and try again (and again and again and again). This can be priceless!

If you already have your affiliate products and you’re working at making more sales, an increase in commissions is the obvious goal of everyone. With more and more products hitting the online market, it’s essential to follow some simple yet crucial steps. So what are they?

If you want your affiliate program commissions to take off, literally overnight, these are the steps you need to seriously consider;

1. Do your research and check out the programs you’re thinking about promoting. It’s pretty obvious that you only want to promote a product that will give you the maximum paycheck in the shortest possible time.

The main factors to consider when doing this are obvious when you stop and think about them, but more often than not, are not fully considered before putting your time and money into making your product pay.

Check the commission structure and make sure it pays well. Also, try to find products that match your target audience and are already paying well to other affiliates. You soon know when a program isn’t meeting up to it’s promises – that’s the time to reconsider its worth and move on to the next.

2. When giving away free reports or ebooks, save and collect, at the very least, the name and email addresses of all those who download your gift. It’s now widely known that very few people make a purchase on their first introduction to a product.

This is where an autoresponder is invaluable as you can create a whole series of follow up messages to send to these prospects to entice them into buying your product. Anywhere between 6 and 10 messages are needed to finally clinch the sale, so automate this process and capitalize on the free report.

Once you have these prospects details, they are yours until the person unsubscribes. This means that you can send them information in the months ahead about other products you’re promoting, long after they’ve bought the original item.

If you develop an ezine, you are in a perfect position to send more valuable, and occasional free, information to these prospects who now value you as a source of knowledge and useful recommendations. You develop a relationship with them and they may stay with you for years to come. They begin to trust you and your recommendations and eventually, are likely to buy from you again.

3. Never underestimate the power of negotiation. Be prepared to haggle with a seller whose goods you wish to promote. Remember that all merchants need affiliates to market and sell their goods and will be more inclined to change their payment structure than potentially loose business if they see you as a good source of income.

Be bold and you could find yourself receiving a greater slice of the pie for all your advertising efforts. Don’t be greedy but be fair and you will be respected for it.

4. Use effective advertising techniques. ‘Pay Per Click’ will give you the most immediate results if you do your research right. Naturally, Google’s Adwords and Overture are the places to start, being leaders in the online PPC field. But, look around and research the smaller players who offer cheaper rates to a smaller audience. These include; ExcelSeek, JumpFind, LookQuick to name just three.
